The cold fruity base is then paired with crunchy macadamia nuts, coconut chips, and fresh fruit for the perfect pick me up for a morning breakfast in hot summer months or an antioxidant-packed afternoon snack. The smoothie bowl doesn’t hold well, so make it just before eating. Frequently Asked Questions What is açai? Açai is an antioxidant-rich berry that has been a source of sustenance across the Amazon in South America for centuries. The açai berry is most often available in either puree or powder form because the fruit is so fragile that its shelf life after harvest is very short. Look for açai puree in the frozen section of the grocery store near other frozen fruit. Can you use other frozen fruit besides mixed berries? Yes, this recipe is very flexible and you can use an equal amount of other frozen fruit, such as mango or banana, in place of the mixed berries. We opted for the mixed berries because we loved the color they added to the smoothie bowl. Notes from the Food & Wine Test Kitchen Using a high-powered blender ensures great texture of the smoothie bowl. If your blender isn’t powerful enough, let the frozen fruit sit at room temperature for five to 10 minutes to thaw slightly before blending. Ingredients 1 (3 3/4-ounce) package frozen unsweetened acai puree (such as Sambazon) 1 cup frozen mixed berries, such as strawberry, raspberries and blueberries 1/2 cup unsweetened canned coconut milk 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup 1/2 teaspoon grated lime zest (from 1 lime), divided 1 kiwi, sliced 1/4 mango, sliced 2 tablespoons chopped roasted macadamia nuts 1 tablespoon dried coconut chips 1 teaspoon hemp or chia seeds Directions 1Puree acai puree, mixed berries, coconut milk, maple syrup, and 1/4 teaspoon of the lime zest in a blender until smooth, 30 to 45 seconds, increasing speed from low to high and stopping to scrape down sides of blender as needed. Pour smoothie into a bowl, and top with kiwi, mango, macadamia nuts, coconut chips, hemp or chia seeds, and remaining 1/4 teaspoon lime zest. Serve immediately. Rate It Print
